An Elf Named LeRoy

LeRoy came to be in 1981 or '82 while I was living in Lander, Wyoming. I worked with a number of people at that time who had young kids, and family & friends elsewhere had the little critters as well. Being in the midst of perpetual financial woes, and thinking myself a clever enough person, I took it upon myself to write a Christmas story that I could give to everyone I owed a Christmas present to that year.

I have no recollection of where the story line came from, or the name LeRoy for that matter. But I can tell you the inspiration behind the street name confusion in Confusingville.

I was driving home from a music gig somewhere in Idaho, and had been driving all night. Made it over Togwatee Pass, down through Dubois and was finally on the home stretch towards Lander, driving down Hwy 287 parallel to the Wind River and the Wind River Mountains. That name in itself is a hint.

I was quite exhausted and the poor brain was somewhat scrambled, so when I saw a bridge sign announcing "Wind River", I couldn't believe the highway people had made such an idiotic mistake. These were the "Wind River Mountains", so that river just had to be the "Wind River Mountains River"! I laughed myself silly when I came somewhat to my senses a few minutes later, and began thinking about how far you could take such a screwy idea. And so was born LeRoy's home town of Confusingville.

This recording does not sound like it should. But it's the best I have at this time, and it's really not too bad I guess. The master recording is on a reel to reel tape, and I don't currently have a machine to play it on. This CD is taken from an old cassette that is at least a couple of generations from the master. Cassettes. Remember them? They never did sound very good.

But it's all still here, and I'm very happy about that. LeRoy and I thank you for listening, and hope you enjoy our story. It's LeRoy's favorite!

Some folks I know think that folk music is to be played softly. And therefore is lame. Well, maybe some is. But I want mine played LOUD!
